Keep your linens looking good with our top tips on how to get oil stains out of linen

Oil stains on linen can be a nightmare to deal with. Whether it's from cooking, accidental spills, or even cosmetics, these stubborn stains can ruin the appearance of your linen and leave you feeling frustrated. However, with the right approach and a little bit of patience, you can successfully remove oil stains from linen and restore its original beauty.

Here are our five steps to removing oil stains from linen

Step #1 - Ack quickly to get oil stains out of linen

The key to successfully removing oil stains from linen is to act quickly. As soon as you notice an oil stain on your fabric, gently blot the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb any excess oil. Avoid rubbing the stain, as it may spread further and penetrate deeper into the fabric.

Step #2 - Pretreat the stain

Once you have blotted away as much excess oil as possible, it's time to pre-treat the stain. Start by directly applying a small amount of dishwashing liquid onto the stained area. Gently work the detergent into the fabric using your fingertips or a soft-bristled brush e.g. a toothbrush, in circular motions. Allow it to sit for about 15 minutes before proceeding to the next step.

Keep Calm And Don't Use Hot Water Hot water can set an oil stain into the fabric making it almost impossible to remove

Step #3 - Rinse & repeat

After allowing enough time for pre-treatment, rinse off the dishwashing liquid under cold running water until all traces of soap are gone. Check for any remaining signs of staining; if so, repeat step 2 until no visible traces remain.

Step #4 - Apply stain remover

If steps 1-3 haven't completely removed all traces of oil staining from your linen item, it's time to bring out more robust measures in the form of stain removers designed explicitly for fabrics like linens or delicates.

Various commercial stain removers are available on the market, but it's always advisable to choose one specifically formulated for oil stains. Follow the instructions on the product carefully and apply it directly onto the stained area. Gently work the stain remover into the fabric using a soft-bristled brush or your fingertips.

Leave the stain remover on for the recommended amount of time mentioned on its packaging, which is usually around 10-15 minutes. This will allow it to penetrate deep into the fabric and break down any remaining oil particles.

Step #5 - Launder as usual

After allowing sufficient time for the stain remover to work its magic, launder your linen item as you would normally do. Make sure to follow any specific care instructions provided by the manufacturer. Use an appropriate detergent for delicate fabrics and wash in cold water to minimise any potential damage.

Once washed, inspect your linen item carefully under good lighting conditions to ensure that all traces of oil staining have been completely removed. If there are still signs of staining remaining, repeat steps 4-5 until you achieve desired results.
